Pay Attention to What Shapes Your Thinking
Recently I noticed something interesting.
After listening again to some talks by Wayne Dyer, my social media feeds suddenly seemed filled with videos about mindset and manifestation.
At first it felt like the world had suddenly become full of these messages.
But that’s not what happened.
Platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram are designed to notice what we watch, click, and pause on. Then they show us more of the same.
In other words, the algorithm starts shaping our feed based on what we’ve already been paying attention to.
If you’re exploring ways to think more intentionally about your life and direction, you can begin here:
And that led me to this thought:
Algorithms will show us more of what we already pay attention to.
But our growth depends on occasionally stepping outside that bubble.
There’s nothing wrong with algorithms. They’re simply responding to our behavior.
But if we aren’t intentional, they can quietly narrow the range of ideas, perspectives, and opportunities we see.
Sometimes without even realizing it, we begin living inside a small digital bubble.
Step Outside the Bubble
Growth requires curiosity.
It requires occasionally exploring ideas that don’t normally appear in our feeds.
Some people feel comfortable staying inside familiar patterns of thinking. But the world is full of perspectives, knowledge, and opportunities we might never discover if we only follow the same paths.
Here are a few simple ways to expand what you see and think about.
Explore something new.
Search for topics outside your usual interests — science, history, art, or another culture.
Follow people who think differently.
You don’t have to agree with every idea you hear. But exposure to different perspectives strengthens critical thinking and helps you see the world more clearly.
Use the “Not Interested” option.
Most platforms allow you to tell the algorithm to show you less of something. This helps reset your feed and encourages more variety.
Protect your curiosity.
What you pay attention to becomes the lens through which you see the world.
Try This for the Next Seven Days
Let’s run a small experiment.
For the next seven days, pay attention to what you are feeding your mind.
Notice the articles you click, the videos you watch, and the ideas that show up in your social media feeds. Much of what we see online is shaped by algorithms responding to our past behavior.
Now do one thing differently each day.
Search for something you normally wouldn’t explore.
You might look up:
- What daily life was like for working-class families during the Gilded Age
- A scientific discovery you’ve never heard about
- The culture or traditions of a country you know little about
- A perspective that challenges your assumptions
The goal isn’t to become an expert in seven days.
The goal is simply to stretch your curiosity and allow new ideas to enter your thinking.
You may discover something unexpected.
You may gain a new perspective.
Or you may simply remind yourself that the world is far bigger than the narrow slice our algorithms show us.
Curiosity expands our horizons.
And the more we explore, the more we begin to see just how many opportunities exist beyond the bubble we started in.
A Final Thought
Pay attention to what shapes your thinking.
Curiosity keeps our world expanding.
When we stop exploring, our thinking quietly narrows.
Pay attention to what shapes your thinking — because it shapes your life.
